Your point about small-scale tests is crucial too. It's lke training a muscle that you hope to never need but are glad to have when the moment comes. It is interesting how much precommitment or voiced intention can keep things at the forefront of the mind and ready to enact. Though something that I didn't go into was that there needs to be( at least for me) a balance between a generalised but firm commitment and a tendency to try and script every possibility.
